Game Bird and Mammal Habitat Conservation or Enhancement

What it is

Starting from the owner’s objectives, this treatment assesses the property for limiting factors — the missing piece of habitat holding back the game birds or mammals the owner wants to support. The manual’s examples:

• ruffed grouse display (drumming) logs,
• American woodcock display space,
• foraging habitat.

Eligibility

• A consultant identifies a lack of game habitat, and
• a PEI Forests, Fish and Wildlife professional confirms it.

Standards and assessment

The work follows this sequence:

1. Identify — a consultant assesses the property against the owner’s target species.
2. Confirm — a PEI Forests, Fish and Wildlife professional confirms the habitat shortfall and recommends conservation criteria.
3. Carry out — the work meets those recommended criteria.
4. Monitor and report — track and report how well the conservation or restoration techniques worked.
