Shelterwood Harvest

What it is
Shelterwood is an even-aged technique for older stands. It establishes a new crop — or releases desirable seedlings that are already there — before the overstory is removed.
- Standard approach: one or more partial cuts of the overstory create good conditions for natural regeneration to establish and grow. Except for legacy trees, the final harvest of the overstory normally happens once the desired regeneration is 1–3 m tall.
- Single-pass option: the trees left standing are never intended for harvest; they stay for ecological reasons. This option releases advanced regeneration that is already present at sufficient levels or better. At least 50% of the desired advanced regeneration should be protected inside the leave strips.
Either approach can be applied uniformly across the stand or in patches, depending on the site.

Residual trees must have at least 30% live crown and be in good health and form.

- Protect the regeneration. When removing the higher volume, prioritize protecting and keeping the advanced regeneration. Wait at least 5 years after harvest before thinning the understory.
- What to cut. Partial cuts remove the poorest-quality trees and keep as much of the desired species as possible. Trees that improve wildlife habitat are acceptable exceptions.
- Pattern. Cut in strips, ideally at right angles to the seed-dispersing winds, or in patches of 0.3 ha or less spread evenly through the harvest area where possible.
- Residual vigour. The remaining stand must be vigorous enough to stay healthy for 20 years after treatment.
- Damage limit. No more than 5% of crop trees damaged. Damage means broken limbs and/or bark damage exposing more than 10 cm² of sapwood on a tree.
