Manual Brush Piling

What it is

Manual brush piling means gathering harvest residue into piles by hand. It may be done as a treatment by itself, or as one part of getting an area ready for planting and/or natural regeneration.

It is not the same as Artificial Brush Cover Piles. Those are built deliberately as wildlife cover; manual brush piling is about clearing ground for new trees.

Eligibility

• An appropriate pre-harvest covertype (see Planting Standards).
• There is enough brush on the site to interfere with natural regeneration and/or planting.

Standards and assessment

An inspector checks visually that:

• the site is clear enough of harvest residue for natural regeneration and/or planting at the prescribed density, and
• there are enough micro-sites for natural regeneration and/or planting of at least 90% of the prescribed density.
